Obama threatens airstrikes on militants in Iraq – Yahoo News

Republican Sens. John McCain of Arizona and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina praised Obama’s proposed actions Thursday night but said much more will be necessary. “This should include the provision of military and other assistance to our Kurdish, Iraqi and Syrian partners” who are fighting the militants, airstrikes against the militants’ leaders and forces and support for Sunni Iraqis who seek to resist the extremists, they said in a statement. In light of the militants’ advances, Obama dispatched about 800 U.S. forces to Iraq earlier this year, with those troops largely split between joint operation centers in Baghdad and Irbil.

In late June it proclaimed a “caliphate” straddling rebel-held areas of Syria and Iraq and seized the major city of Mosul. In recent days it has seized towns formerly populated by Christians and Yazidis. Iraqi religious leaders say Islamic State militants have forced 100,000 Christians to flee and have occupied churches, removing crosses and destroying manuscripts. Meanwhile, several thousand Yazidis, members of an ancient pre-Muslim religious minority, are stranded on high ground after being driven out of their home town of Sinjar by IS fighters.

“This bill covers a lot of ground – from expanding survivor benefits and educational opportunities, to improving care for veterans struggling with traumatic brain injury and for victims of sexual assault,” Obama said at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, speaking to an audience of service members, veterans, and their families. The VA was thrust into the spotlight this spring after allegations surfaced that it had covered up the months-long wait times some veterans had to endure before receiving medical care. Former head of Veterans Affairs Eric Shinseki resigned in late May as the scandal mounted, and last week the Senate unanimously confirmed former Procter & Gamble Co Chief Executive Officer Robert McDonald. “As a new generation of veterans returns home from war and transitions into civilian life, we have to make sure the VA system can keep pace with that new demand,” Obama said. He said there were no casualties because the pullback took place “without a fight.” “Our capability is limited,” said a Kurdish official who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the subject. “We do not have the ammunition; we do not have weaponry.” In a statement, the Islamic State listed what it said were 17 military advances against the Kurds over the past five days. It said it had launched the offensive to avenge alleged shelling by the Kurds on Mosul, which the Islamic State seized in June. The Washington Post contributed to this report. Who are the Yazidis? The Yazidis, globally, number about 700,000 people, but the vast majority of the community about half a million to 600,000 live concentrated in Iraq’s north.
